Line quality and how to create emotion in a single line
This exercise is key to your understanding of emotion in the
line or mark.to illustrate my position I have given you examples of nine
different types of lines and what I believe each line conveys emotionally
This can be the difference between an average or a great
drawing for example if you are drawing a subject scene or still life that is
busy active exciting and filled with energy the type of line that you would use
would contain all of the above emotions a lazy slow river line would tell a
different story.
Make up your own story board and see how many different
emotions you can create using line here is my take on the nine different lines I
have created
1 cheeky quick simple short to the point
2 stable three vertical lines with a quirky twist
3 pedestrian in order going somewhere
4 energy artistic Asian
5 maritime underwater flow pulsating
6 unpredictable crazy erratic
7 repetitive circular smooth swing round and round
8 erratic hectic high energy
9 curved repetitive structural canopy cover
Van Gogh drawing
Check out the lines in the field and the wheat and the
figure all three sets of lines are telling you a different story how brilliant
was this man
Have fun do a story board and draw practice
