Composition is all about placing what you are drawing on the
page where do you position it so that it will look interesting and exciting to illustrate
the point let’s take three circles if we just palace them in the middle of the
page it will not be very exciting if we take the same three circles and place
them differently on the paged we have created a piece of artwork what becomes
evident very quickly is the size arrangement and position of the circles the
circles start to interact with each other and the edge of the page
Whatever you are drawing will have the same interaction so
play around and become aware of what is happening in your artwork and do not be
afraid of big white spaces space or the lack of space can be very exciting on a
page.
A little more about composition early artists understood the
use of space and they developed the golden triangle a three quarter method of
composition i.e. they divided their work and layouts using this rule I have
given you a simple graphic to illustrate this the three quarter could be
further divided into more three quarter quarters but the same overall rule
still applies
The famous painting of the last supper clearly demonstrates
this rule and even our second circle arrangement uses this technique
Have a look at how Van Goch treats this composition three
quarter one quarter again.
